Pongal: A feast; a celebration!

‘Pongal’ is a word derived from the Tamil literature meaning “to boil.” It is a harvest festival that is celebrated for four days in Tamil Nadu in the months of January-February (Thai) during the solar equinox after harvesting of major crops like rice, sugarcane, turmeric, etc.

Pongal is celebrated for a span of four days: Bhogi Pongal, Surya Pongal, Mattu Pongal, Kanum Pongal.

Bhogi Pongal-  This is day 1 of the festival where people discard old belongings in a bonfire and celebrate with new possessions and clothes. The houses are cleaned and decorated and prayers are offered in great faith. In villages, farmers pray to Saptha Kannimaar (7 virgin goddesses) with the belief that they will bless their lands to be fertile.

Surya Pongal- Day 2 of the festival is dedicated to Lord Surya while giving thanks to the harvest of the winter. On this day, the women dress up, get together and Pongal, the sweet dish is prepared in a mud pot decorated with garlands, spotted with sugarcane stalks near the stove. The dish is allowed to boil and overflow out of the vessel signifying greater fortune in the year ahead.
