Why we celebrate Makar Sankranti - 

In India, it’s known with different names and celebrated with different rituals in different states. In the northeast states, it is called Pousha Sankranti, in Tamil Nadu, it’s known as Thai Pongal and in Kerala, it’s known as Makar Vailakhu. 

Makar Sankranti is also known as “Khichdi” or we can say, the main dish of this festival is “Khichdi” which is made of rice and lentils. It’s believed that eating “Khichdi” on this day provides reliefs from many  Grah Dosha. 

Significance of Makar Sankranti -

Makara means ‘Capricorn’. The movement of the sun into ‘Makara Raashi’ or the ‘Zodiac of Capricorn’ is called Makar Sankranti. Every year the date of this festival is based on the solar calendar.

According to legends, it’s believed that Sankranti is a name of God and on this day she killed the demon, Sankasura and the day after, she killed another demon Kinkarasur. That’s why this day is also known as Kinkrant in some regions.

Apart from that, this festival is celebrated in the honour of “Surya Devta”. It also marks the end of the winter season and the onset of spring.
