Story behind Muharram

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar. The festival is celebrated for the whole month but especially on the 10th day by Shia and Sunni muslims all over the world. Both factions of muslims celebrate it for different reasons but with similar traditions.

With Shia muslims, on the 10th day they mourn the loss of Hussain Ibn Ali. He was a significant and famous figure for the religion as he was Prophet Muhammad's grandson. It is said that he did not accept Yazid’s islamic rule. When he revolted against them, he was beheaded and his family was imprisoned.

When it comes to the Sunni muslims, the 10th day of Muharram is important because it signifies the day Moses become victorious. Moses was an Islamic leader preaching the teachings all over the world and on this day he got victory from the Pharaohs of Egypt.
